Dr. K. C. Veeranna (B.V.Sc & A.H., M.V.Sc., Ph.D., PGDEE) has assumed the charge of Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, Karnataka on 11th July, 2022. Before joining this post, he has served as Acting Vice-Chancellor, KVAFSU, Bidar, Registrar, KVAFSU, Bidar, Dean, Veterinary College, Shivamogga, Officer on Special Duty, Veterinary College, Gadag and University NSS Coordinator. He has been very instrumental in planning, designing and furnishing of facilities for the laboratories, infrastructures etc. as per VCI and ICAR regulations. Further, he also has an experience of working on statutory bodies/committees at university, state and national levels. He is involved in undergraduate and post graduate teaching, research and extension for more than 30 years in the discipline of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education in the capacity of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor & Head. He has guided 15 M.V.Sc students and Advisory committee members for more than 50 M.V.Sc and 03 Ph.D. students. As a researcher, he was Principal Investigator (PI) for three externally funded Projects which include the funding support from KWDP II - Sujala III Project, ICAR-NAIP and DBT, New Delhi. Further, he has also operated four university funded projects and has been Co-PI for several projects. He has also been Nodal Officer for KWDP-II; Sujala-III Project for KVAFSU, Bidar. As an extension professional, he has organized/coordinated two national conferences, 30 training programmes for the officers of the line Departments, 150 trainings to farmers, five livestock shows and more than 100 on-farm demonstrations. Also, he has participated as a resource person in various extension activities organized by other organizations. He has published 67 research papers in high quality national and international journals apart from about 70 Papers presented in National / International seminars/conferences, 120 Popular articles / Leaflets / Bulletins and five books.
The efforts of the visionary leaders of the state and nation has led to the formation of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar as per the Karnataka Act No. 9 of 2004 exclusively for the development of education and learning; conduct of research and extension education and transfer the rural oriented technologies in the areas of Veterinary, Animal, Dairy and Fisheries Sciences in Karnataka. The same was published in the Karnataka Gazette Extra-Ordinary on the 23rd day of February, 2004. The logo of the University is inscribed with the slogan Farmers Friendly and Rural Oriented, which emphasizes the importance given to betterment of farming community.
The university has a state wide jurisdiction with five Veterinary Colleges, two dairy science colleges, one fisheries science college, 10 research and information centres, four extension education centres, five animal husbandry polytechnics and one Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Farm Science Centre). Further, Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals (IAH&VB), an institute under KVAFSU has its diversified activities of production of biologicals and diagnostic services through a network of units in Karnataka state. The university is known for its quality education as is evidenced by the output of high quality graduates who are the proud products and torch bearers of the University spread worldwide. They have occupied coveted positions in prestigious organizations in India and abroad and are serving with dedication. The vast network of colleges, research stations and extension centres of the university has played an influential role in this endeavour.
The research is currently addressed with clear benchmarking of deliverables through research and service/development projects through national and international funding agencies like ICAR, RKVY, World Bank, OIE, ICRISAT etc. The research programmes of the University are mainly applied in nature for solving problems of farming community. Further, emphasis is also placed on basic research to support applied research for tackling fundamental problems. The University has earned a high reputation for closely working with farming community and other stakeholders including the Government Departments and civil society organizations. The success stories emerging out of research and development projects are serving as the inspiration to empower other farmers with animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries technologies.
The University has achieved a tremendous success since inception. However, it is the time for us to introspect about our achievements, goals and foresee the changes to be brought in structure and functioning of the organisation to make it more vibrant to address emerging challenges and demands of the farming community in local and global scenario. The thrust areas would be increasing farm productivity, enhancing farmers’ income, improving knowledge level and expanding agribusiness/entrepreneurship keeping in view the aspects of depleting natural resources, biodiversity conservation, climate change, focus on indigenous systems etc. In this context, the University endeavour is to keep pace with new frontiers of science and contemporary developments to be socially and technically relevant. Further, KVAFSU, Bidar is strongly committed in absorbing newer paradigms and using them to develop excellent human resource, innovative technologies and their dissemination so as to serve the livestock and fishery farming community of the state and the country.
On this occasion, I wish to congratulate all the staff and students, who brought laurels to the University and extend my sincere thanks to everyone who have contributed for the development of this esteemed University.
