About Us

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) is an autonomous public funded institution established on 20th November 2010. KUFOS is the first Fisheries University in the country. The headquarters of KUFOS is at Panangad, 12 km away from Kochi city, along NH-47. The University now has a sprawling campus of 67.83 acres in the headquarters at Panangad, 50 acres at Fisheries research station, Puduveypu situated at the Vypeen Island and extensive 10 acres off campus at Thiruvallom near Vizhinjam. The territorial jurisdiction of the University is extended to the whole of the State of Kerala and the Headquarters of the University is at Kochi in Ernakulam District.

KUFOS was established by an Act of the Kerala State Legislative Assembly by delinking the College of Fisheries from the Kerala Agriculture University and started functioning on 01.04.2011. The University was established for the development of manpower in fisheries and ocean sciences and for ensuring proper teaching, training, research and extension in the State of Kerala. KUFOS imparts quality education comparable with world class standards and giving significance to research oriented studies with effective and rewarding extension activities. With a view to producing technocrats of high caliber we provide highly qualified faculty, full fledged infrastructure facility and good linkages with reputed national and international institutes. The academic excellence is intended to be attained by undertaking graduate and post graduate teaching and research programmes in emerging disciplines of fisheries science. With a view of meeting the requirement of state and reaching to national priorities, specialized courses are being introduced in the needy areas thereby creating professionals in the niche area.

The mission of the university is to serve as a flagship university of higher learning through demonstrated and growing excellence in teaching, research, extension, scholarship and creative work in fisheries and ocean sciences, comparable with global standards that will benefit the country and the world at large.
